Because the Chevrolet Onix is definitely obese. Take a look at this tiny little compact, and try to guess its weight

Kinja'd!!!

Nope, it weighs a hefty 1490 kg. That's 1.5 ton for a car that's compact even by Brazilian standards. Hell, it's smaller than the Ford Fiesta. I was gathering some info about it for an Oppo review, so I took a peak at the owner's manual because, the 1.4 engine being oddly quick, I thought it must have been a pretty light car, right? Wrong.

It's about 400 kg heavier than my Tipo. Hell, it's heavier than some of the classic Muscle Cars. And the engine puts out a measly 99 hp. How it feels quick, I'll never understand... I probably need more time with it before I can write something about it, though.

EDIT: Unofficial sources put the car's weight at 1049 kg, so the manual might have a typo... Or lots of typos, as it lists the weights of all four different versions in 1400's range.

Is the chassis made out of lead or something?!

It might as well be, logical explanations don't seem to be working... I figured the automatic transmission had something to do with it, but the manual version only weighs like 20 kg less.

1490 kg for that thing? Amazing. Curb weight or 'dry' (don't know the right word) weight? My at least as large mk2 Golf is 820 kg according to the official papers ('dry'). My much, much larger Peugeot is in the high 1300s, which is already a bit much IMHO.

GM really should work on their heft. We don't get that Onix in Europe, but the Opels we do get are rather obese compared to the competition. Which translates to poorer driving dynamics and fuel economy.

Edit: I just looked it up and a brand new Astra weighs a whopping 230 or so kg more than a comparable new Peugeot 308. That's an absurdly huge difference.

Probably curb, as there was a small asterisk noting passengers and luggage weren't considered, but didn't say anything about fluids.

What worries the most, though, is that automakers aren't just making heavier cars, they're also cutting down power. The Corsa we had before this Onix was probably lighter and had 130 hp, and it already felt sluggish. If this trend continues, in 5 years we'll have cars weighing 2 tons powered by 50 hp 2.0 engines...
